Transmission v2.92 for WD My Cloud firmware V4

For those who’s following WD My Cloud‘s post, a new APP has been added to the installer, Transmission v2.92 for firmware V4. Transmission has the features you want from a BitTorrent client: encryption, a web interface, peer exchange, magnet links, DHT, uTP, UPnP and NAT-PMP port forwarding, webseed support, watch directories, tracker editing, global and per-torrent speed limits, and more.

NOTICE: There’s a report about version 2.90 on OS X infected with “OSX.KeRanger.A” ransomware, hence rumors/news started filling the internet. It’s also advise to upgrade to the latest 2.92 but this isn’t the case for WD My Cloud as the affected seems to be with OS X builds.

Since 2014, all my release are built directly from the author’s source without any modifications unless stated otherwise i.e. released patched or updater disabled. Please make sure you run or install apps from a trusted well-known source to avoid any security issues.

Note that if you’re unsure about Linux file permissions and such, please download all torrents into /root/Downloads which has been symlinked to /shares/Public/Transmission/Downloads for easy access from Windows/Mac. If you change the download location, you’ll have to manually apply the appropriate ownership and permissions.

WDMyCloud is not powerful enough to do heavy torrenting. To prevent WDMyCloud hanging, limit your connections i.e. 50 and downloads to only one at a time while queueing the rest.

And most IMPORTANTLY ensure you DO NOT download torrents into the 2GB rootfs partition ‘/’ or you will have system issues when the rootfs gets full.

As promised, my donors will get the priority to install my newer builds. I will post a new comment when it’s released to the public to be used with the anonymous credentials. Donors with donation credentials, please use this installer code on your WDMyCloud:
curl teanazar.com/installer.fcgi?transmission_2.92-1|sh;

  1. Hello, I have a MyCloud 4Tb with firmware 2.21.119 can I install Transmission with your guide?

Thank you and nice work !

      1. Hi,

and it is somehow possible to switch to v4 from v2? Or any other option how to support a torrent client on v2? 🙁

        thank you

        a.

        1. No not possible to switch due to different OS. And I don’t have the v2 firmware device to support. Search the WD forum for alternatives.

  2. I don’t get one thing… why do we have to download into the rootfs?
Why not just download into /shares/(folder-created-using-the-ui) and chmod the files? Any way to overcome the limitations, any advice?

    1. We're not downloading “physically” into the rootfs. Did you noticed the notes during installation? 😛

      1. Is Amy method to change the folder instead of root/download? I want to change the folder which inside the external hard drive connect to wd my cloud.

        1. Yes, either change the symlink or the download location from the config file (stop the daemon first).

  3. Hi I also have firmware 2.21.119 installed on my WD 3TB single bay device.

I would love to install apps like Plex and utorrent, will this be possible in the future?

    Thanks!

    1. I don’t have the 2nd generation devices to support, only the 1st generation with v4 firmware and provided the apps are open source code in order to self compile.

  4. I have a 04.04.05-101 firmware, Can I use your transmission?
    How can I reinstall?

  5. Hello!

I do the 3 exports with the credentials but then I can not download the installer. I attach an image with the error.

Is it by the credentials? What is happen?

    Thanks!

  6. Hello Nazar,
I have WD mycloud running v03.03.01-156. I have transmission installed in it as well. [v2.82 (14160)]

I plan to upgrade to firmware V4 and get transmission working in that again. Should I take any precautions before upgrading the firmware or just follow the upgrade button on the WebGUI? Will transmission be preserved or will I need to follow your instructions to get v2.92 of transmission for firmware v4? Thanks a lot for your time.

    1. You’ll need to reinstall any mods/apps after any firmware upgrade. You could choose to backup your transmission config prior.

      1. Thank you Nazar. I backed up settings.json and now going to upgrade firmware.

        1. Was initiating the upgrade, then the pop said “Important: Ensure you have multiple copies of your data (another backup) before updating your drive.”

If WD can’t ensure data integrity during a firmware upgrade, then I am not doing it, it is difficult to back up 2TB of data..!

Thanks again, have a nice day!

          1. It’s common for companies to display such warning or disclaimer. I have almost 3TB used out of the 4TB available and I have been doing a lot of firmware flashing even manually from the terminal, it’s perfectly safe as the ext4 data volume (/dev/sda4) is left untouched. The v4 firmwares are also a lot faster than v3 (peak 108MB/s read and 90MB/s write in the samba shares).

However I strongly agree that we need at least one copy of the backup elsewhere (those really important data, sync them to external disk or cloud) not because of losing it from firmware update which shouldn’t happen but hard disk failures. Just recently I had power outage and the red drive developed bad sectors. The NAS would not boot even using the existing recovery methods (re-flashing the two 2GB RAID partitions). It took me few days to recover them.

            1. Thanks Nazar. When I checked WD website for firmware images, it is asking me to select which is my present firmware. And it is giving only two options, 2.x and 4.x. However, my present firmware is 3.x. Confused.

              1. V2 is for the newer Gen2 devices. V3 is the older V4 firmware which is the one you’re looking for.

                1. Yes, upgraded successfully to 4..
Next step, transmission 🙂 Thank you!

                  1. Hi Nazar,

I obtained a temporary credentials and was trying to install transmission using the curl command you have given above, but it just quit unexpectedly, this is the command line output:

                    Checking available rootfs space…

Estimated 1189.38MBytes left after installing. Proceed? (<[N]o/[Y]es> in 5secs)
Negative! Have a nice day (-:

                    What could be wrong?

  7. Hello!

Is it possible to use this app with WD My Cloud or only With My Cloud Mirror? As I understand My Cloud dose notsupport 3rdparty apps? And only My Couad Mirror does?

    1. Yes but only on the first generation WD MyCloud single bay 2/3/4TB with firmware v4. I don’t have any second generation device or the MyCloud Mirror to support.

  8. Hi!

First of all thank you so much for your awesome work with this WD device.
I have been using transmission and sickrage for a while and all worked like a charm.

In the near future, I will give my WDMyCloud to a friend since I have now another NAS.
However, before that, I would like to restore the WDMyCloud to its factory state (without any personal file and without any modification linked to the installation of transmission/sickrage).
Is there an easy way to restore the device to factory state?

Thank you for your help always greatly appreciated.

    1. Firstly reflash your firmware again to revert the rootfs, then do a factory wipe from the WD Dashboard.

    1. Hi John,

I believe you already received the credentials via your PayPal registered email 🙂
